How Long Should You Leave Tree Tubes on Trees?
Leave a tree tube in place until the diameter of the tree’s trunk at its base is approximately the same as the diameter of the tube. Do not remove the tube simply because the tree has grown out of the top or because a certain number of years has passed.
Tree growth varies by species, planting site, rainfall, soil conditions and maintenance. One tree may fill its tube much sooner than another. Using trunk diameter as the removal trigger gives landowners a practical standard that works better than following a fixed schedule.
When Should a Tree Tube Be Removed?
A tree tube should generally be removed when the trunk at the base of the tree approaches the inside diameter of the shelter. At that point, the tube has largely completed its job, and leaving it in place could restrict the tree or make removal more difficult.
Until then, the tube can continue protecting the young tree from:
- Deer browsing
- Rabbits and small rodents
- Herbicide drift
- Wind stress
- Mower and equipment damage
- Accidental trampling or disturbance
Inspect the tube at least once each growing season. Once the trunk begins getting close to the tube’s diameter, check it more frequently so the shelter can be removed before it becomes tight against the bark.
Do You Remove the Tube When the Tree Grows Out of the Top?
No. A tree growing out of the top of its shelter is normally a sign of progress, not a reason to remove the tube.
The central leader may emerge from a 48- or 60-inch tube while the trunk is still relatively slender. The lower trunk can remain vulnerable to rodents, deer rubbing, herbicide drift and equipment damage even after the top of the tree has grown beyond browsing height.
Continue using the tube until the trunk’s base diameter approaches the diameter of the shelter, provided the tube remains in good condition and is not damaging the tree.
How Many Years Should Tree Tubes Stay On?
There is no single number of years that applies to every tree. Fast-growing chestnuts or sawtooth oaks on a productive site may fill their tubes faster than slower-growing white oaks or trees planted on dry, compacted or highly competitive sites.
Growth rate can also be affected by:
- Tree species and genetics
- Seedling size at planting
- Soil quality and drainage
- Rainfall and supplemental watering
- Grass and weed competition
- Sunlight
- Deer pressure and other damage
Instead of marking a removal year on the calendar, inspect each tree individually and use trunk diameter as your guide.
What Should You Inspect Each Year?
Tree tubes are low-maintenance, but they should not be installed and forgotten. Walk through the planting periodically and check the following:
- Trunk diameter: Make sure the base of the trunk still has adequate room inside the tube.
- Tube position: Straighten any tube that is leaning or pressing against the tree.
- Support stake: Confirm that the stake remains solidly anchored and has not rotted, broken or loosened.
- Zip ties: Replace broken or missing ties and make sure they are not contacting or constricting the trunk.
- Central leader: Check that the main leader is growing upward and is not trapped, forked or bent sharply over the tube.
- Vegetation: Remove vines, grass and weeds growing inside or immediately around the shelter.
- Bird net: Adjust or remove the net when necessary so it does not interfere with the emerging leader.
- Insects and nests: Look inside the tube for anything that could interfere with the tree.
Storms, high winds and wildlife activity can loosen tubes and stakes, so inspect exposed plantings more often.
What If the Tree Bends After Growing Out of the Tube?
Rapidly growing leaders can sometimes bend after emerging above the shelter, especially before the trunk has developed enough strength to support the new growth.
First, make sure the tube and support stake are standing straight. If the leader is still flexible, gently guide it upward rather than forcing a sharp bend. Temporary support may be needed, but avoid fastening anything tightly around the stem. Any tie used near the tree should allow movement and should be checked regularly to prevent girdling.
Do not top the tree merely because the leader bends. Preserving and training one strong central leader is generally preferable for young chestnut, oak and other hardwood seedlings.
How to Remove a Tree Tube Safely
Remove the shelter before the trunk becomes tightly wedged inside it. Choose a time when you can clearly see the trunk and work carefully.
- Inspect the entire tube and locate the trunk before cutting anything.
- Remove or cut the zip ties attaching the shelter to the stake.
- Open the tube along its existing seam whenever possible.
- If cutting is required, keep the blade pointed away from the trunk and bark.
- Lift or open the shelter gently without scraping the tree.
- Inspect the trunk for rubbing, wounds, insects or other damage.
- Remove the old tube, ties and any unusable plastic from the planting site.
Never pull forcefully on a tube that has become tight around the tree. If the trunk has already filled the shelter, carefully open the tube from the outside in small sections while protecting the bark.
Does the Tree Still Need Protection After Tube Removal?
Possibly. A tree may be large enough to have its tube removed but still be vulnerable to buck rubbing, equipment damage or wildlife activity.
After removal, evaluate the conditions around each tree. In areas with heavy deer pressure, a wider wire cage or suitable trunk protector may be needed. Any replacement protection should provide adequate room for continued trunk growth and should be inspected regularly.
Continue maintaining a weed-free area around the tree. Removing the tube does not eliminate competition from grass and weeds for moisture and nutrients.
