Hybrid Chestnut Planting Guide
Planting your new hybrid chestnut trees is simple! Follow these steps to give your trees the best start and ensure years of strong growth and nut production.
Care When Trees Arrive
-
Unpack Immediately: Remove trees from the box as soon as possible.
-
Keep Roots Moist: Never let roots dry out. Keep them in the original bag or wrap with damp paper/peat moss until planting.
-
Short-Term Storage: Store in a cool, shaded place with roots moist but not waterlogged.
-
Extended Delay: If planting is delayed more than a week, “heel in” trees by covering roots with moist soil or mulch.
Care While Planting
-
Keep Roots Hydrated: Forestry and nursery professionals recommend placing bare-root trees in a 5-gallon bucket of water (or damp slurry) while planting.
-
This prevents roots from drying out in the sun or wind and reduces transplant shock.
-
Only remove a tree from the bucket when you’re ready to set it in the ground.
Sunlight & Location
-
Plant in full sun (6–8 hrs daily).
-
Choose well-drained soil, avoid low/wet spots.
-
Space 25–40 ft for nut production, 15–20 ft for wildlife plantings.
Soil & Amendments
-
Prefers loamy soil, pH 5.5–6.5.
-
For heavy clay: plant slightly above grade, mix in pine bark fines, compost, or coarse sand.
Planting Steps
-
Dig hole twice as wide as roots, same depth as root collar.
-
Spread roots outward, trim broken ends.
-
Backfill with soil (plus amendments if needed).
-
Water in well.
Watering & Fertilizer
-
Water weekly the first year (about 5 gallons/tree).
-
No fertilizer at planting. Start in year two with a light spring application of balanced fertilizer (10-10-10).
Tree Tubes
-
Use 4–5 ft vented tree tubes to protect from deer and rodents.
-
Stake securely, mulch lightly around base (keep mulch off trunk).
-
Remove or split after 3–5 years.
Pruning
-
At planting, only prune damaged branches or double leaders.
-
Keep one strong central leader for best nut production.
