Two-year-old Shumard oak seedlings for deer habitat, reforestation and native tree plantings. Each quantity ordered is one seed-grown, dormant bare-root tree, approximately 18–48 inches tall, grown for two growing seasons in our air-pruning nursery beds in South Carolina. Tree tubes and stakes are available separately. Weed control is recommended during establishment.

Our seed-grown Shumard Oak seedlings are a strong choice for landowners establishing wildlife habitat, reforestation plantings and future timber value. This native red oak is known for relatively fast growth, broad site adaptability, attractive fall color and large acorns used by deer, turkey, squirrels and other wildlife.

We grow each seedling in an air-pruning nursery bed at White Oak Orchard in South Carolina. This method encourages a dense, fibrous root system rather than circling roots, helping prepare the tree for successful establishment and long-term growth after planting.

Best Planting Sites

Shumard Oak performs best in full sun and well-drained to moderately moist soil. Suitable locations include field edges, open woods, wildlife corridors, reforestation areas and larger habitat plantings. Avoid locations where water remains for extended periods.

Protect young seedlings with a tree tube and control competing vegetation during the first few growing seasons. Allow adequate room for the tree’s mature canopy.

Shumard Oak produces relatively large acorns that provide valuable fall and winter forage for deer, turkey, squirrels and other wildlife. As a native red oak, its acorns mature over two growing seasons and can help diversify the timing and availability of mast across a property.
