Shumard Oak Seedling
Fast-Growing Native Red Oak for Wildlife, Timber, and Land Improvement
Shumard Oak is a fast-growing native red oak valued for wildlife habitat, timber potential, adaptability, and attractive fall color. It produces large acorns that are used by deer, turkey, squirrels, and other wildlife, making it a strong choice for habitat improvement and long-term land enhancement.
These seedlings are grown from seed in air-pruning nursery beds at White Oak Orchard in South Carolina. Air-pruning encourages dense, fibrous root systems instead of circling roots, helping improve transplant success, establishment, and long-term growth once planted on your property.
Why Plant Shumard Oak?
Shumard Oak is a valuable addition to a wildlife or land improvement planting because it offers:
· Fast growth compared to many other oak species
· Strong wildlife value as a mast-producing oak
· Large acorns used by deer, turkey, squirrels, and other wildlife
· Good adaptability to a variety of soil types
· Timber potential and long-term land value
· Attractive red fall color
Best Planting Sites
Shumard Oak performs best in full sun and well-drained to moderately moist soil. It is a good choice for field edges, open woods, wildlife corridors, reforestation projects, and larger habitat improvement plantings.
For best results, protect young seedlings with a tree tube and control weeds around the tree during the first few growing seasons.
Wildlife Value
Shumard Oak produces acorns that provide an important fall and winter food source for wildlife. It is a strong companion species to other mast-producing trees and can help add diversity to a long-term wildlife planting.
